Training is essential for your American Bulldog. Without training they can
become very strong willed and there size makes them difficult to handle
without training. However a little training with good communication can go
along way. American Bulldogs are one of the easiest dogs to train that you
could find, they want to please, all they need is there pack leader to tell
them what to do and they are quite easy to get along with. Start training
your puppy AS SOON as you get him home. Regularity is the key, with just
a couple of minutes a day you can teach them very much as far as manners
and there basic obedience goes.

American Bulldogs are great for someone with previous experience with
large energetic dogs. If you have never had a dog like this I suggest having
a trainer that you can start working with as soon as you get your American
Bulldog home.

American Bulldogs make great pets and can be very good house dogs. They
are also a hardy dog, that with good shelter (a warm house in winter &
shade in the summer) and fresh water available at all times, can do very
good outside.

American Bulldogs are great with the family and as a rule love kids. Just
use common since and supervision with small children.

American Bulldogs are great personal protection dogs, and although being
a guardian comes natural, the only way to be sure that your dog (any
breed) will truly step up and protect your family is through training.

A good personal protection dog is stable and will only become aggressive
when told or truly threatened. They are confident around all people (after
all how can he protect you if he is scared of people or you can't trust him
around strangers. If your dog is aggressive and you must leave him at
home or lock him up to keep from having a liability on your hands what
good is he) they MUST be good with people.

A protection dog should be very obedient (aiding in stability, & keeping
yourself out of trouble should your dog have to protect you.)

Contrary to common belief, good protection training will not make a
vicious, uncontrollable, and unstable dog, but help build their confidence
in themselves making them MORE STABLE.

With time and effort American Bulldogs make great pets. You can also find
a great variety of events to show your American Bulldog in, be it
conformation, obedience, weight pull, or personal protection events such
as
K9 Pro Sports, agility and much more.

Getting any dog is something you must think about seriously, it should be
viewed as a lifelong commitment, not a "I'll try the dog and if I don't like
him I can dump him or just put him to sleep." All dogs require work and a
good deal of training in order to be a great member of the family. But it can
be a truly great experience and a fun road to travel.

I strongly believe that if you have an American Bulldog, that you should
work them toward getting an AKC Good Citizen Certificate (CGC),
especially if you train them as a protection dog. There is to much negativity
and misconception tied up with not only the American Bulldog but
protection work. Both are widely misunderstood. The CGC requires skills
that ANY dog should know.
The American Bulldogs Background:
The American Bulldog originated as a catchdog (mostly
cattle) and property protection dog, in America's
Southeast. He was not bred to put on threat displays or to
look a certain way. But, he did need the right equipment to
take care of his real bulldog duties which were,
confrontational, personal, and property protection and as
a catchdog. He needed to be strong  enough to put unruly
bulls on the ground and athletic enough to catch hogs that
were allowed to free range in a semi-wild country.
About the Breed- American Bulldogs
The American Bulldog is a medium to large dog that is
well muscled, and very strong. They are an active dog
especially as puppies and young adults. American
Bulldogs NEED a good deal of exercise.

American Bulldogs must be well socialized with people,
other dogs, and any thing else you want them to be
comfortable, confident, and friendly around.
