About Me
I am Maryanne. I have been around dogs most of my life,
and have been in the breeding business for 17 years now. I
have grown up with Catahoulas. My dad got his first
Catahoula when I was 2. I have always loved dogs. When I
was little I spent most of my time in the dog house playing
with the puppies.
When we started, we started with about the worst dog
you could start your breeding program with. Her name
was Coodie.
Coodie was about as big a conformation wreck you could
get, she was just UGLY, but she was a great working dog.
From there we started getting other dogs that were a little
better looking than the first. Then we started learning
about genetics and improving our dogs through each
generation. Needless to say our dogs today are much
better all around than when we started.
When I was 10 I met Alan Mills. Alan taught me allot
about dogs and the importance of socialization. He is also
the primary reason I went from just messing with my
dogs to training.
At 11 I started showing my Catahoulas with the NALC. This was another
big step in me building my interest in working with my dogs. It also was the
key in sparking my interest in, and teaching me to look at conformation. I
then began to understand the importance of having not only a good
working dog but a dog that is built right.
I was able to learn allot about reading dogs through training hogdogs.
When I started learning about Personal Protection I was amazed at how
many similarities there are in these two different types of working. The
back ground with hogdogs truly has helped me with the other training I am
doing now, enabling me to pick up on the different drives much faster and
just being able read and figure out my dog. With out that back ground I
would have a lot of catching up to do
When I was 13 I was given my First American Bulldog. She was given to me
by Alan Mills with Hogbender American Bulldogs. Just like with the
Catahoulas I got hooked. I became very impressed with the wonderful
disposition these dogs have as well as the fact that they almost seem to
come trained. I started with #1 and then had to get #2 and it has just
grown from there.
Fortunately I was able to start with a much better looking dog than what
we started with on the Catahoulas. The dogs I started with also were good
working dogs. So needless to say I have not had nearly as much work to do
in coming up with good dogs.
I became interested in personal protection training when my second
American Bulldog was about a year old. But I was unable to come up with a
trainer that I could work with until my stud dog - Newman - was a year old
that was when I met Butch Cappel. However due to circumstances it was
another 2 years before I could actually start training with Butch Cappel.
Making Newman 3 before I ever did any training with him. Despite the age
of my dog he has done exceptionally well in his training, as have the other
dogs I have started working in this personal protection program.
Butch Cappel has helped me tremendously. He taught me allot about
reading my dogs and motivating them. He sharpened up the old
techniques that I had not been able to use for several years as well as
teaching me many new ones. My only hope is that I will retain the huge
amount of information that I gained and some day will be some where near
as good as he is.
My goal with my American Bulldogs is to first off enjoy them. I want to
produce dogs that are a complete well balanced package, that can do any
thing and every thing you want. I have never been one to just pickup one
thing and do it, I get board, I want to be able to take any of my dogs to a
show and put them in whatever class I take a notion to. I don't particularly
care if my dog beats everyone else I just want them to do well with
whatever suits my fancy at the moment and be good dogs.
I try to give my dogs the best care possible, and make there life with me as
enjoyable as I can.
To end with, I want to thank a few people who have helped me get were I
am.
First I want to thank my parents. They have always been there to help me
out. Thanks Dad for always providing me with the support that I have
needed, allowing me to have my numerous collection of dogs and the help I
needed with my training.
Thank you Alan Mills for inspiring me to train my dogs and continually
reach for higher goals with them. Thanks for all the training you have given
me, and the help that you have given me over the years in my training
pursuits.
Thank you Carl Morrison for helping me to see all the different things I
could do with my training, the advise you have given me, and thanks for
helping me get pointed in the right direction.
Thank you Butch Cappel, I greatly appreciate the time that I am able to
work with you and learn. That time and training has helped me
tremendously, I am able to accomplish so much more with my dogs than I
could before. I will recommend your program to any one who asks.
